CAPSAICIN & SURF with Oliver Kurtz

Burn For More Interview Series

Being a pro surfer might be one of the most envied lifestyles this world has to offer. I’m  talking about the intrepid wave riding elite who travel around to exotic locations and get paid for doing what they love the most. They spend their lives riding the pulse of mother nature’s most powerful and mysterious elemental force, which pretty much sounds  like the most Promethean life one could ever live.

It’s the total realization of dream through hard work, determination and fearlessness. To even get out there in the water amidst these  often deadly waters is unfathomable to most, and yet there a few who tame the beast and ride it with a playful bliss.

We were fortunate to get to spend an afternoon and catch up with Prometheus drinking Pro Surfer Oliver Kurtz and although he might not be the most loquacious of the bunch, I can surely tell you that his positive energy is contagious and he’s the kind of guy that’s just genuinely fun to be around. So check out his Q&A, watch some of his videos and follow him on twitter @olliekurtz

Where are you originally from and how has that effected the development as a surfer?

Im from Vero Beach, Florida, and to be totally honest it really had no impact on becoming a good surfer. There is no surf culture at all and no world class waves within a 50 mile radius.

You’ve been sponsored by Hurley since your 15 years old, is that rare in the surfing community?

Not at all. Nowadays 15 year olds can have 6 figure contracts. I was lucky back then because Hurley picked me as one of Florida’s 5 or so riders.

What inspires and motivates you to Burn For More in life?

The idea of a life with endless possibilities makes me burn for more. One can never really get enough out of life, whether it’s travel, food, culture, or entertainment, there’s so much this world has to offer and I always want more.

If you could have any super power what would it be?

The ability to be able to teleport anywhere. I hate airplanes.

As a professional surfer, you get to travel quite a bit and see some amazing parts of the world. What are some of your favorite places ?

My top five would have to be, Panama because the people are genuinely friendly and It’s still relatively undiscovered with very few tourists running around, oh and the casinos are amazing.  France because of the nude beaches, fine wine,  good cheese and amazing surf. Fiji because its surreal to be in the middle of the ocean with the worlds best waves. Australia because how comfortable I feel when I’m there,  It’s the worlds best place if you are a surfer. And lastly I’d have to say England  because  I love London and the countryside. I’m  just fascinated with that old world setting.

When you’re not surfing, how does Ollie Kurtz spend his time.

I’m always bothering my brother Troy Kurtz for new music. I’m also kinda obsessed with going out at night right now and started recently started to dabble in mixing music. Oh and lastly, women seem to consume quite a bit of my time these days as well.

If you could eat dinner with any one person  all of history, who would it be?

Wow, this is a hard question. I would like to pick someone’s brain like an ex-president, a world leader or maybe even a famous artist like Salvador Dali…. but I’m going to be real about it and go with Rodney Dangerfield for shear entertainment’s sake.

What is it about Prometheus Springs that you enjoy most and what’s your favorite flavor?

My go to flavor right now is the Mango Chili served at room temperature. I like how smooth and the refreshing it is with its fresh mango taste and subtle capsaicin kick on the back of it.

If you could give a little word of advice to all the kids out their who are chasing dreams, what would it be?

Never give up. There is always a way to make it in the world. Times always get tough but its those times where a positive attitude pays off.

Lastly, define success?

Success is when you are totally and utterly happy in the moment that is right now.
